Verb forms - Kriyaa Ke Roop - क्रिया के रूप

Verb = Kriyaa (क्रिया)
Form = Roop (रूप)

In Hindi, the verbs are spoken slightly differently depending on the gender, tense, and if it is about singular or plural. In Hindi, there is no neutral gender because neutral gender is also treated as either masculine or feminine gender. The gender for neutral gender objects is clearly defined in few cases. All other cases, it is learned by practice. In a few cases, common practice may differ depending on the context, region or the dialect being used.  

Let us take an example of verb khel (खेल = play) and understand various forms of it

Order  (no respect, not used in convcersation): Play = Base verb: Khel (खेल) = play

  • Play outside =  baahar khel (बाहर खेल)

Order / Request (normal conversation, with peer group): Play = Base verb + o : Khelo (खेलो) 

  • Play outside =  baahar khelo (बाहर खेलो)

Order / Request (with seniors / plural): Base verb + iye : Kheliye (खेलिये) = play

  • Play outside (Please) =  (kripaya) baahar kheliye (कृपया बाहर खेलिये)

Simple present tense, male, singular: Base verb + ta : Khelta (खेलता) = play / plays

  • He plays outside =  vah baahar khelta hai (वह बाहर खेलता है)
  • John plays outside =  John baahar khelta hai (जॉन बाहर खेलता है)
  • I play outside =  main baahar khelta hoon (मैं बाहर खेलता हूँ)
  • I play everyday =  main rose khelta hoon (मैं रोज़ खेलता हूँ)
Simple present tense, female, singular: Base verb + ti : Khelti (खेलती) = plays

  • She plays outside =  vah baahar khelti hai (वह बाहर खेलती है)
  • I play outside =  main baahar khelti hoon (मैं बाहर खेलती हूँ)
Simple present tense, plural: Base verb + te : Khelte (खेलते) = play

  • They play outside =  way baahar khelte hain (वे बाहर खेलते हैं)
  • We play outside =  hum baahar khelte hain (हम बाहर खेलते हैं)
Present continuous, male, singular: Base verb + raha : Khel raha (खेल रहा) = playing

  • He is playing outside =  vah baahar khel raha hai (वह बाहर खेल रहा है)
  • John is playing outside =  John baahar khel raha hai (जॉन बाहर खेल रहा है)
  • I am playing outside =  main baahar khel raha hoon (मैं बाहर खेल रहा हूँ)
Present continuous, female, singular / plural (second/third person):
Base verb + rahi : Khel rahi (खेल रही) = playing
Exception to this rule is first person plural which will always be treated by next rule
  • She is playing outside =  vah baahar khel rahi hai (वह बाहर खेल रही है)
  • Rita is playing outside =  Rita baahar khel rahi hai (रीटा बाहर खेल रही है)
  • I am playing outside =  main baahar khel rahi hoon (मैं बाहर खेल रही हूँ)
  • They are playing outside =  way baahar khel rahi hain (वे बाहर खेल रही हैं)
  • Girls are playing outside =  laDkiyan baahar khel rahi hain (लड़कियाँ बाहर खेल रही हैं)



Present continuous, male / mixed, plural/senior: Base verb + rahe : Khel rahe (खेल रहे) = playing

  • Boys are playing outside =  ladke baahar khel rahe hain (लड़के बाहर खेल रहे हैं)
  • Students are playing outside =  chhatr baahar khel raha hain (छात्र बाहर खेल रहे हैं)
  • They are playing outside =  way baahar khel rahi hain (वे बाहर खेल रहे हैं)
  • We are playing outside =  hum baahar khel rahi hain (हम बाहर खेल रहे हैं)



Past continuous / male / singular: Base verb + raha : Khel raha (खेल रहा) = playing

  • He was playing outside =  vah baahar khel raha tha (वह बाहर खेल रहा था)
  • John was playing outside =  John baahar khel raha tha (जॉन बाहर खेल रहा था)
  • I was playing outside =  main baahar khel raha tha (मैं बाहर खेल रहा था)

Past continuous / female / singular: Base verb + rahi : Khel rahi (खेल रही) = playing

  • She was playing outside =  vah baahar khel rahi thi (वह बाहर खेल रही थी)
  • Rita was playing outside =  Rita baahar khel rahi thi (रीटा बाहर खेल रही थी)
  • I was playing outside =  main baahar khel rahi thi (मैं बाहर खेल रही थी)

Simple future tense, female, singular, first person:

  • Base verb + oongi : Kheloongi (खेलूंगी) = will / shall + play
  • I will play outside =  main baahar kheloongi (मैं बाहर खेलूंगी)

Simple future tense, male, singular, first person:

  • Base verb + oonga : Kheloonga (खेलूंगा) = will / shall + play
  • I will play outside =  main baahar kheloonga (मैं बाहर खेलूंगा)
Simple future tense, male, singular: Base verb + ega : Khelega (खेलेगा) = will / shall + play

  • He will play outside =  vah baahar khelega (वह बाहर खेलेगा)
  • John will play outside =  John baahar khelega (जॉन बाहर खेलेगा)
Simple future tense, female, singular: Base verb + egi : Khelegi (खेलेगी) = will / shall + play

  • She will play outside =  vah baahar khelegi (वह बाहर खेलेगी)
Simple future tense, plural: Base verb + enge : Khelenge (खेलेंगे) = will / shall + play

  • They will play outside =  way baahar khelenge (वे बाहर खेलेंगे)
  • We will play outside =  hum baahar khelenge (हम बाहर खेलेंगे)

Other forms: used to play

  • (male singular) khelta tha
  • (female singular/plural) khelti thi /thin 
  • (plural male/mixed) khelte the
